Studies on the phagocytic activity of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) to rough and smooth Escherichia coli in young conventional and germfree guinea pigs

, : Studies on the phagocytic activity of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) to rough and smooth Escherichia coli in young conventional and germfree guinea pigs. Folia Microbiologica 18(4): 319-323

The inability of the RES of germfree guinea-pigs to phagocytose smooth strains of E.coli seemed to be due to a lack of the appropriate opsonis in serum. When smooth strains are sensitized with specific antiserum before injection, they were phagocytosed as efficiently as rough strains.
