Studies on the physical properties of the subsoil of satsuma orchards

, : Studies on the physical properties of the subsoil of satsuma orchards. Bulletin of the Shikoku Agricultural Experiment Station (25): 119-232

In an extensive survey of orchards in the Shikoku district observations and experiments on the following factors were conducted: soil profile characteristics in sloping and terraced orchards; the relationship between soil physical properties and satsuma root development; the physical values of the subsoil critical for root penetration; the effect of subsoil structure on water movement; the effects of water permeability and water supply of the subsoil on tree growth; the effects on the trees of physical and chemical improvements in the subsoil; and the relationship between available soil depth and tree growth. The basic physical factors of the subsoil affecting productivity were non-capillary porosity and bulk density, and these, with the available soil depth, can be used as criteria to decide whether a soil can be adapted for satsuma production and, if so, what amendments it needs.
