In the self-incompatible Minowase only 5-10% of pollen grains germinated when transferred to stigmas of the same and very few penetrated the stigma. However, the rate of germination rose to 20-30% if the pollen was first placed for 20 min on the stigmas of the cross-compatible Shogoin and then back to Minowase stigmas, and this treatment also resulted in stigma penetration by more pollen tubes.
