Studies on the physiology of host-parasite relationship in Orobanche. 3. Carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism of host and parasite

, : Studies on the physiology of host-parasite relationship in Orobanche. 3. Carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism of host and parasite. Physiologia Plantarum 27(3): 347-353

Determinations of various carbohydrate and nitrogen fractions were made in Orobanche shoots and tomato and mustard plants infected with O. cernua and O. aegyptiaca respectively. Infection caused an increase in the content of total reducing and total sugar content of the host with a simultaneous decrease in the acid-hydrolyzable and total carbohydrates in the constituent organs. This was attributed to predominance of hydrolytic activity in the infected host.
