Studies on the physiology of serotonin in the domestic fowl, with emphasis on the small intestine

, : Studies on the physiology of serotonin in the domestic fowl, with emphasis on the small intestine. Dissertation Abstracts International 35B(10): 5065

Concentrations of serotonin in the blood, brain and small intestine were higher in female fowls than in males. It was 7.9 mu g/g in the small intestine of males against 10.79 in females. It was also shown that females were capable of a greater rate of synthesis of serotonin than males. The synthesis was decreased with parachlorophenylalanine. Exogenous serotonin did not raise the levels in the intestine. Thus synthesis and storage of the compound appeared to be mutually independent processes.
