Studies on the potassium requirement of the laying hen

, : Studies on the potassium requirement of the laying hen. Journal of Nutrition 104(6): 684-686

Laying hens were given for 84 days a diet based on glucose and isolated soya protein. Ca, P, Na and Cl were constant in diets with 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2 or 0.3% K as potassium phosphate. Egg production and weight and shell thickness were significantly less with 0.05% K than with all other concentrations among which results did not differ, and with least K 40% of the hens died after showing muscular weakness and inability to stand.
