In pot trials, the emergence of barley seedlings at 12 days after sowing was increased from 8% after irrigation with water to 84 and 60% after irrigation with 5000 and 2500 ppm NaCl + Na2SO4 solution, respectively. Incorporation of 15 g compost or bean residues/kg soil increased emergence to 56 and 29%, respectively. The soil treatments increased soil water retention and delayed soil crust formation.
