Studies on the propagation of plums from stem cuttings. I. Observations on the presence of preformed roots in Prunus domestica and P. salicina

, : Studies on the propagation of plums from stem cuttings. I. Observations on the presence of preformed roots in Prunus domestica and P. salicina. Rivista della Ortoflorofrutticoltura Italiana 58(6): 437-442

The existence of adventitious root primordia on the branches of plum trees is described for the first time. They did not form the standard burr knots but were distributed along the branch and below it on the side away from the crown. A histological examination revealed no sign of root primordia in 1 year-old-wood, whereas a few typical enlarged parenchyma rays with cambial extrusions were evident in 2nd year wood and many in 3rd year wood.
