Studies on the pungency of red pepper fruit: the effect of mineral nutrition, especially phosphorus nutrition

Withholding nutrient N from capsicum plants growing in sand culture reduced top growth and leaf colour. Lack of P or K, however, depressed root growth, and lack of K caused severe leaf necrosis. The capsaicin content of the fruit was very low in plots without P or PK. The rate at which P was supplied also affected fruit growth and capsaicin content both of which were best at 30 p.p.m.
