Studies on the radioprotective effect of cysteine. Influence of cysteine treatment before and after X irradiation on root-tip mitosis in Vicia faba

, : Studies on the radioprotective effect of cysteine. Influence of cysteine treatment before and after X irradiation on root-tip mitosis in Vicia faba. Caryologia 26(2): 157-169

Treatment with a 0.05 mol solution of cysteine before irradiation with 500 R reduced nucleus abnormalities by nearly 50%, while treatment after irradiation reduced abnormalities by only 35%. Further reductions were achieved by treatment both before and after irradiation, only 20% abnormalities being observed. Irregularities in frequency of mitosis and length of cycle were reduced by 50% by pretreatment with cysteine.
