Groups of horses, sheep and cattle were injected intraarticularly in the carpo-metacarpal joint: with trypan blue or pyrilamine blue in normal saline; with 0.5% formol saline; with heterologous serum in a series of doses to induce allergic arthritis; or with autologous blood. The aseptic inflammatory processes so caused activated defence reactions in the folds and villi of the synovial capsule, and in the epiphyseal trabeculae adjacent to the joint cavity.
