Studies on the resistance of trees to air pollution. III. Relationship between soil fertility and resistance to sulphur dioxide

, : Studies on the resistance of trees to air pollution. III. Relationship between soil fertility and resistance to sulphur dioxide. Technical Bulletin of the Faculty of Horticulture, Chiba University (21): 91-98

Experiments in which Zelkova serrata trees were planted in soils with 3 rates of fertilizer (and in an unfertilized control) and then treated with SO2 at 2.5 p.p.m. for 2 h showed that trees with the higher rates of fertilizer suffered less defoliation, produced more leaves and overcame necrosis better than those in unfertilized soil.
