Studies on the respiration intensity of potato tubers as an indicator of damage caused by different methods of harvesting and handling

, : Studies on the respiration intensity of potato tubers as an indicator of damage caused by different methods of harvesting and handling. Archiv fur Acker und Pflanzenbau und Bodenkunde 16(1): 21-30

In experiments in 1959-63, the respiration rate and consequent loss of starch of healthy potato tubers handled by different methods, were measured by gas analysis. Using an improved harvester, respiration was only slightly higher than with hand-picking, but was considerably greater when an older model was used. Increased mechanical handling during sorting, transport and storage considerably increased respiration even without visible damage to tubers.
