Studies on the role of histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine in immunity against the nematode Trichostrongylus colubriformis. II. Amine levels in the intestine of infected guinea-pigs

, : Studies on the role of histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine in immunity against the nematode Trichostrongylus colubriformis. II. Amine levels in the intestine of infected guinea-pigs. International Archives of Allergy and Applied Immunology 46(1): 14-27

Following primary infection of guinea-pigs with the nematode, histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine levels in the small intestinal mucosa increased to approximately three times pre-infection levels. Guinea-pigs immunized by previous infection and challenged with larvae showed an additional increase in mucosal histamine but a transient decrease in 5-hydroxytryptamine. Five days after challenge, the histamine concentration in small intestinal contents of immune guinea-pigs tripled.
