Studies on the role of light transmissibility of a single leaf and plant type as factors constituting light extinction coefficient K in maize populations

, : Studies on the role of light transmissibility of a single leaf and plant type as factors constituting light extinction coefficient K in maize populations. Proceedings of the Crop Science Society of Japan 43(2): 283-288

Plants of maize Koh No.7 were grown 5, 10 or 20 cm apart in the glasshouse and light extinction in the canopy was studied. As plant density and plant age increased, the light extinction coefficient (K) declined and light transmission rate (LTR) through a single leaf increased. LTR had little effect on K, but parameter S, representing average leaf orientation, markedly affected K.
