Studies on the root rotting fungus Pyrenochaeta lycopersici: characterization of extracellular enzymes which degrade pectic compounds, and factors affecting the synthesis of these enzymes

, : Studies on the root rotting fungus Pyrenochaeta lycopersici: characterization of extracellular enzymes which degrade pectic compounds, and factors affecting the synthesis of these enzymes. Physiological Plant Pathology 4(1): 51-62

When grown on a medium containing pectic substances as the C source, P. lycopersici produces an extracellular endopolygalacturonase which randomly cleaves pectic acid in preference to pectin; also trace amounts of an exolyase but no detectable amounts of pectin esterase. Production of the polygalacturonase was max. at pH 5. The addition of monosaccharides to the medium repressed polygalacturonase production, but the enzyme appeared rapidly when all the monosaccharide had been metabolized.
