Studies on the root system of five principal grasses of Sehima-Dichanthium cover

, : Studies on the root system of five principal grasses of Sehima-Dichanthium cover. Annals of Arid Zone 13(3): 177-186

In studies in 1964-7 with S. nervosum, Heteropogon contortus, Chrysopogon fulvus, D. annulatum and Iseilema laxum, the number of roots increased with plant age, S. nervosum showing the greatest increase and with H. contortus had the greatest depth of roots up to 18 months of age. By 30 months the average root depth of all species had decreased significantly. Drought resistance based on root depth was highest in S. nervosum and lowest in I. laxum.
