Studies on the shootborer Hypsipyla grandella (Zeller) (Lep., Pyralidae). XXIII. Electroantennograms (EAG) as a tool in the analysis of insect attractants

, : Studies on the shootborer Hypsipyla grandella (Zeller) (Lep., Pyralidae). XXIII. Electroantennograms (EAG) as a tool in the analysis of insect attractants. Turrialba 24(1): 24-28

In this further part of a series from Costa Rica, the author reviews the ways in which electroantennograms (EAG's) are obtained and their value as a rapid method for the detection of natural stimuli eliciting an olfactory response. It is stressed that EAG's should be accompanied by behavioural tests. EAG's provide information only on certain receptive processes and do not elucidate the central processes that turn peripheral information into behavioural activities.
