Studies on the skin of plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.). III. The effect of temperature on the inflammatory response to the metacercariae of Cryptocotyle lingua (Creplin, 1825) (Digenea: Heterophyidae)

Eighty-nine O-group Pleuronectes platessa were exposed at 15 deg C to Cryptocotyle lingua cercariae after which 45 were maintained at 15 deg C and 44 at 5 deg C. Both groups were sampled at 6, 18 and 42 hours and daily up to 710 hours after infection. Histopathological examination showed epidermal lesions associated with encysted metacercariae, myofibrillar necrosis associated with bacteria possibly introduced by the cercariae, and swelling of the intermuscular septa.
