Studies on the sowing date and the suitability of certain onion varieties for growing as a one-year crop under northern Black Sea conditions

, : Studies on the sowing date and the suitability of certain onion varieties for growing as a one-year crop under northern Black Sea conditions. Gradinarska i Lozarska Nauka 9(6): 63-72

In 3 years' trials with 6 onion cvs crops sown in the autumn or early winter were usually damaged by frost, but marketable yields were similar or only slightly lower than those of spring-sown crops. The dry matter and sugar contents of the bulbs were not affected by the sowing date. In storage the total sugar content declined and sucrose was converted to invert sugar more rapidly in bulbs of cvs with a relatively short physiological dormancy.
