Studies on the split application of nitrogen to rainfed hybrid sorghum

, : Studies on the split application of nitrogen to rainfed hybrid sorghum. Indian Journal of Agronomy 16(2): 157-158

In trials in 1968-9 on black clay soil under rain-fed conditions with sorghum hybrid CSH-1 given 45 kg P2O5 + 22 kg K2O/ha, application of 67.2 kg N/ha in a single dressing at sowing or in 2-3 split dressings differing in fertilizer rates and application intervals increased average grain yields to 3.27-5.11 t/ha from 2.91 t/ha on plots given no N; application of N in 2 equal split dressings at sowing and 1 month later gave the highest yield increase and application of N in a single dressing at 1 month after sowing gave the lowest increase. In trials in 1968-9 on black clay soil under rain-fed conditions with sorghum hybrid CSH-1 given 45 kg P2O5 + 22 kg K2O/ha, application of 67 kg N/ha in a single dressing at sowing or in 2-3 split dressings differing in fertilizer rates and application intervals gave average fodder yields of 5.46-7.77 t/ha, compared with 5.7 t/ha on plots given no N; application of one-third of the N at sowing and two-thirds at 1 month after gave the highest yields.
