Studies on the sterile male technique for control of the European pine shoot moth, Rhyacionia buoliana (Lepidoptera: Olethreutidae)

, : Studies on the sterile male technique for control of the European pine shoot moth, Rhyacionia buoliana (Lepidoptera: Olethreutidae). Technical Bulletin, Washington Agricultural Experiment Station (64): 6

Rhyacionia buoliana (Schiff.) is an introduced pest of ornamental pines in western Washington and the possibility of its spread to native stands of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) is a matter of concern to the timber industry. In studies undertaken to determine the feasibility of controlling the insect by the release of sterile males, rearing the moth in large numbers from field-collected larvae proved expensive and resulted in high mortality, probably because of bacterial infection.
