In a further study the effects of sizing on the waterproof properties and mechanical strength of wet-process hardboard made from chips of Red Lauan (Shorea spp.) were investigated. The modulus of rupture of the board was markedly increased by addition of up to 1-2% phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin as sizing agent. The stress at proportional limit in bending was also increased by use of PF resin, irrespective of the quantity added, but Young's modulus in bending was not affected.
