Studies on the successive cultivation of Italian ryegrass and barnyardgrass on a paddy field converted to upland conditions. 2. Changes of shedding habit and germination capacity of barnyard grass seed after heading

, : Studies on the successive cultivation of Italian ryegrass and barnyardgrass on a paddy field converted to upland conditions. 2. Changes of shedding habit and germination capacity of barnyard grass seed after heading. Journal of Japanese Society of Grassland Science 20(2): 69-72

In studies on the use of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli var. caudata) as a forage crop, it was shown that seeds began to be shed from the pedicel 8-9 days after heading and 50% were shed by 20 days after heading. Germination capacity of shed seeds was 95-100%; that of all seeds (shed + unshed) increased by about 4.8%/day to reach 80% at 20 days after heading.
