Studies on the sulphur : nitrogen ratio in forage plants. III. Effect of a fourfold nitrogen fertilizer dose and a double sulphur dose on the protein quality and nitrate content of diploid and tetraploid grasses and red clover

, : Studies on the sulphur : nitrogen ratio in forage plants. III. Effect of a fourfold nitrogen fertilizer dose and a double sulphur dose on the protein quality and nitrate content of diploid and tetraploid grasses and red clover. Schweizerische Landwirtschaftliche Forschung 11(3): 333-346

A diploid and a tetraploid variety each of Trifolium pratense and of Lolium perenne and two diploids and a tetraploid of L. multiflorum were examined for response to high doses of N (NH4NO3) and S (K2SO4) in pot tests. The latter had no observable effect, and the former increased protein, nonprotein and nitrate N to a similar extent in both diploids and tetraploids; it appeared that the tetraploids did not differ from the diploids in protein-sulphur-quotient or in protein synthesis.
