Studies on the surface flora of extruded plastics for food packaging

, : Studies on the surface flora of extruded plastics for food packaging. Milchwissenschaft 28(8): 479-486

The surface of plastics packaging materials and containers was not always sterile even immediately after extrusion. Heating times of 3-7 min in the extruder in which final temp. reached 120-220 deg C did not destroy all bacteria originally present in the plastics mix and in particular failed to destroy completely added spores of Penicillium commune and Bacillus cereus. Extrusion at 220 deg C unexpectedly proved less lethal to microorganisms than extrusion at 200 deg C.
