The callus studied was from shoot apex cultures and had been subcultured every 30 days on Murashige and Skoog's agar medium for over 2 years. Callus growth was rapid for about 30 days and then gradually slowed down. The formation of vessels, but not roots, occurred. Callus growth depended mainly on the division of normal cells although the callus consisted partly of abnormal cells of unusual shape and size with several abnormally shaped nuclei.
