Studies on the tolerance of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata (Peters), a natural enemy of mosquito larvae, to the septic pollution of water

, : Studies on the tolerance of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata (Peters), a natural enemy of mosquito larvae, to the septic pollution of water. Japanese Journal of Sanitary Zoology 24(2): 165-174

The results are given of studies on tolerance to septic pollution in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, which has been found to be an effective predator of mosquito larvae in sewage waters. When 5 g powdered laboratory-animal food is added to 10 litres of water and kept at 23 deg C, no dissolved oxygen can be detected in the water in a few hours, yet guppies can survive many days in such water, apparently by taking oxygen from the surface.
