Studies on the transmission of African horsesickness

, : Studies on the transmission of African horsesickness. Onderstepoort Journal of Veterinary Research 37(3): 165-168

Laboratory-reared Aedes aegypti, Culex pipiens fatigans and trap-caught Culicoides biting midges were fed on African horse sickness virus suspensions and on infected horses. Attempts to isolate the virus from these insects from 1 to 40 days after feeding, by intracerebral inoculation of unweaned mice, were unsuccessful. Thus the successful artificial infection of mosquitoes with the virus and its biological transmission by Culicoides spp. recorded by other workers could not be repeated.
