An infectious principle was transferred from apple trees with apple, proliferation to Catharanthus roseus. Mycoplasma-like organisms alone, or together with rickettsia-like bacteria, had been shown to be present in diseased trees. Transfer from infected to healthy Catharanthus plants was obtained by grafting. Only mycoplasma-like organisms could be seen in Catharanthus plants which had developed yellowing symptoms following infection in this way.
