Studies on the use of induced autopolyploidy in the breeding of red clover. Part 2. Flowering and seed setting in diploids and tetraploids

, : Studies on the use of induced autopolyploidy in the breeding of red clover. Part 2. Flowering and seed setting in diploids and tetraploids. Zeitschrift fur Pflanzenzuchtung 67(2): 103-119

Five diploids and seven tetraploids were tested over four years at Ultuna, Sweden (60 deg N). Compared with the diploids, the tetraploids produced fewer heads per plot and rather more florets per head, and had a lower seed set, the values for the first and last of these components in the tetraploid Ulva being two-thirds of those in the related diploid Disa. The calculated seed yield was appreciably lower in the tetraploids.
