Studies on the utilization of reserve substances by vegetative and reproductive organs in grapevines. II. Effects of defoliation on flowering and berry set in one-year-old cuttings

, : Studies on the utilization of reserve substances by vegetative and reproductive organs in grapevines. II. Effects of defoliation on flowering and berry set in one-year-old cuttings. Journal of the Japanese Society for Horticultural Science 42(2): 131-137

In each of 2 studies the uppermost bud was left on the cutting and this gave a shoot which was allowed to produce one flower cluster only. In the study with Campbell Early cuttings originally weighing 15 g the percentage of fruited plants 3 weeks after full bloom was highest (42.2) where only the leaves below the cluster were left, and progressively less (24.5, 5.6 and 2.2) where no leaves, all the leaves and the distal leaves beyond the cluster, respectively, were left.
