Studies on the variability of the crude-protein content of lucerne and correlations between dry-matter and crude-protein yields

, : Studies on the variability of the crude-protein content of lucerne and correlations between dry-matter and crude-protein yields. Archiv fur Zuchtungsforschung 2(1): 53-69

In trials of 20 cultivars, the order of their yields differed in different cuts. Yield of protein was highest in Flandria. The correlation between protein content and protein yield ranged from 0.08 to 0.65, with a mean between 0.3 and 0.4. Between protein yield and yields of green and dry matter the correlations were between 0.7 and 0.9, and between dry-matter yield and protein content, -0.54. In early stages of selection, therefore, protein determination could be dispensed with.
