In trials at 4 sites using 3 japonica, 3 indica and 3 Penglai hybrid rice cultivars grown for the 2nd crop in 1971 and the 1st crop in 1972, the brown rice from 2 native cultivars had high amylose content and the Penglai hybrids had low protein contents (9.05% of dry matter). Some early japonica cultivars and Penglai hybrids had high protein and reducing sugar contents but gave low yields. Environment had no significant effect on composition.
