Study of the mother-child relationship in sheep (Ovis aries) during suckling

, : Study of the mother-child relationship in sheep (Ovis aries) during suckling. Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Seances de l' Academie des Sciences, D 278(21): 2691-2694

Observation of Prealpes du Sud ewes and lambs revealed a wide variety of behavioural patterns in suckling. In most cases (74% of single lambs and 61% of twins) the lamb went under the ewe's neck or stood by her shoulder before trying to suck, while the ewe generally sniffed at the lamb; after this type of sequence 82% of suckling attempts were successful, vs. only 47% in other cases.
