The fine structure of pea root nodules. 1. Vacuolar changes after endocytotic host cell infection by Rhizobium leguminosarum

, : The fine structure of pea root nodules. 1. Vacuolar changes after endocytotic host cell infection by Rhizobium leguminosarum. Physiological Plant Pathology 5(1): 75-79

An electron microscopical study on the development of central tissue of pea root nodules provided additional evidence for the endocytotic character of rhizobial cell infection. Considerable plasma synthesis accompanied by either disappearance or shrinkage of vacuoles and then new vacuole formation was observed in all infected cells in the infection zone. These fine structural changes are thought to be features of a kind of partial host cell de-differentiation induced by rhizobial cell infection.
