The importance of the genetical differentiation of the components of Italian ryegrass crosses

, : The importance of the genetical differentiation of the components of Italian ryegrass crosses. Genetika a Slechteni 10(4): 297-305

Eight varieties were crossed in all possible combinations with 23 inbred families representing various stages in the production of components of a synthetic variety from lines of Roznovsky From analysis of data on green-matter yields of 333 F1 progenies (the other 35 combinations failed to set seed), it was established that the contributions of individual varieties to the performance of the hybrids differed not only with the variety but also according to the individual families with which they were crossed and the stage of selection, i.e. the degree of stabilization within a line. In addition, the performance of reciprocal crosses differed in some cases. Canberra City was unsuccessful as the seed parent in all combinations but one, though it performed well as a pollinator. In the role Koebenhavn was the least successful, while Motterwitzer gave the greatest number of high-yielding combinations, whether as seed parent or pollinator. The most successful of the inbred families were 7 and 10.
