The significance, in 3 field experiments, of negative correlations between nodule weight and dry bean production was analysed. There was some N fixation although N was not limiting to plant growth. The negative effects of nodulation on yield were attributed to physiological disorders resulting from rhizobium-host association or to a common resistance mechanism to rhizobia and certain pathogens.
