The specific effect of a mixture of hardwood barks, used as an organic soil amendment, on the growth and the NO3 content of carrots treated with fertilizers containing an excess of N

, : The specific effect of a mixture of hardwood barks, used as an organic soil amendment, on the growth and the NO3 content of carrots treated with fertilizers containing an excess of N. Comptes Rendus des Seances de l' Academie d' Agriculture de France 57(18): 1638-1643

Pot experiments with growing carrots, in which the bark of hardwoods (chiefly Oaks) was mixed with mineral and/or organic fertilizer in varying proportions, showed that the hardwood bark could counteract the harmful effects of excessive N in the soil. Even when no adverse symptoms were present in the plants, the addition of the bark reduced the concentrations of nitrates in the plants themselves.
