Tree training methods and production of tree-type guava, (Pisidium guajava L.)

, : Tree training methods and production of tree-type guava, (Pisidium guajava L.). Proceedings of the Tropical Region, American Society for Horticultural Science 13: 216-220

Re-training guavas from bush-type trees to single-trunk trees so as to facilitate mechanical harvesting was accomplished by severe pruning. The reduction in yield during the first year after treatment as a result of reduced bearing surface was overcome 2 years after treatment. In preliminary mechanical-harvesting tests with a tree shaker originally designed for coffee, 80% of the fruit harvested was classed as acceptable for processing, 12% as green and 8% as overripe.
