Association of NADP- and NAD-linked malic enzyme activities in Zea mays: relation to C4 pathway photosynthesis

Among spp. with C4 photosynthesis, those showing high activities of NADP malic enzyme also contain significant NAD-dependent malic enzyme activity. In maize the NAD malic enzyme activity varied widely in extracts from leaves, and incubating extracts at 25 deg C increased NAD malic enzyme until the ratio NADP-:NAD-dependent activity reached 5. Properties and association during purification suggested that the 2 activities were catalyzed by the same enzyme. Pennisetum typhoides [P. americanum], Sorghum sudanense and Panicum antidotale also showed evidence of association between NADP- and NAD-dependent activities. It was concluded that the NAD-dependent activity would have no significant function in photosynthesis.
