Biosystematics of insects living in female birch catkins. I. Gall midges of the genus Semudobia Kieffer (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae)

, : Biosystematics of insects living in female birch catkins. I. Gall midges of the genus Semudobia Kieffer (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae). Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 120(6): 153-197

Details are given of studies in the Netherlands on 5 species of Semudobia that develop in the female catkins of birch (Betula). All stages are described, and keys are provided. A neotype is designated for Cecidomyia betulae Winn., which subsequently became the type species of Semudobia. The literature on this species is reviewed and discussed, together with characteristics of the genus and the galls caused by these gall midges. The other 4 species considered are here described as new.
