This brief review of the gradual enrichment of understanding of the role communication can play in rural development reveals the existence, and often the coexistence, of at least four basic theoretical approaches: Communication as (a) persuasion; (b) as transmission of information; (c) as personal expression, social interaction and relationship; and (d) as a vital instrument of social and political change associated with authentic rural development.
