Current research with haploids and haploidy in alfalfa, Medicago sativa

, : Current research with haploids and haploidy in alfalfa, Medicago sativa. Haploids in higher plants Advances and Potential IV Utilization of haploidy in plant breeding: 274

Maternal haploids (2n = 2x = 16) of cultivated M. sativa (2n = 4x = 32) have been routinely produced by the interploid cross method for use in transferring marker genes from tetraploids to diploids. The haploids have been used for producing a ploidy series from 2x to 8x by (1) somatic chromosome doubling and (2) interploid crosses, the latter resulting in a ploidy series with a comparatively broad genetic base.
