Early stages of pear breeding at East Malling

, : Early stages of pear breeding at East Malling. Proceedings of Eucarpia Fruit Section Symposium V Top Fruit Breeding Canterbury, Sept 11-14-1973: 1-13

Particular attention is paid to combining high fruit quality with characters associated with yield, such as precocious bearing, self fertility, parthenocarpy, late flowering, many flowers per truss and frost resistant blossoms. Dwarf or semi dwarf spreading habit and compatibility with quince rootstocks are also important selection criteria.
