Effect of dietary additions of hydrochloric and lactic acid on feed intake and metabolism of sheep and cattle

, : Effect of dietary additions of hydrochloric and lactic acid on feed intake and metabolism of sheep and cattle. Irish Journal of Agricultural Research 15(1): 55-63

Acids were added to a pelleted grassmeal control diet given to 5 bullocks and 5 wethers in a double Latin square design, lactic acid at 500 and 700 mmol/kg DM and HCl at 300 an 500 mmol/kg, giving dietary pH values of 4.2, 4.0, 4.4 and 3.8, respectively. Feed intake as a percentage of the control intake for cattle was 96.6, 93.4, 78.6 and 66.2 and for sheep 84.2, 86.7, 87.0 and 71.4 in that order. The interaction on feed intake between species and treatment was not significant.
