Effects of mirex on the general ant fauna of a treated area in Louisiana

, : Effects of mirex on the general ant fauna of a treated area in Louisiana. Environmental Entomology 3(6): 895-898

The effect of mirex bait treatment on 14 common ants was studied in Washington Parish, south-eastern Louisiana. The most noticeable effect was the suppression for one year of Solenopsis invicta Buren. Reductions of 98% in the number of inhabited mounds and 99.5% in foraging workers occurred within a month of treatment. Populations of three other species, S. xyloni McCook, Pogonomyrmex badius (Latr.) and Monomorium minimum (Buckley), were also reduced.
