Genetically determined response to different ingested carbohydrates in the production of diabetes

, : Genetically determined response to different ingested carbohydrates in the production of diabetes. Hormone and Metabolic Research 10(2): 86-92

Offspring of rats selected for 5 generations from those with highest blood glucose values 1 h after a glucose load by mouth and normal rats were given diets with 72% carbohydrate supplied by maize starch, sucrose, glucose or fructose. After 2 and 3 months on the diets they were given glucose 350 mg/100 g bodyweight by mouth and after 8 months they were killed. After the glucose load, normal rats given diets high in sucrose, glucose or fructose showed normal carbohydrate and lipid metabolic responses. In susceptible rats given the 3 diets, glucose loading showed impaired tolerance compared with that in rats given starch; blood cholesterol was increased, especially in rats given fructose, as were blood triglycerides in rats given fructose. Diffuse glomerulosclerosis was present in 2 of 16 rats given sucrose, 3 of 24 given fructose and 1 of 22 given glucose.
