Insulin secretion and biosynthesis in sucrose fed rats

, : Insulin secretion and biosynthesis in sucrose fed rats. Diabetologia 12(5): 441-446

Male Wistar rats weighing 40 to 45 g were fed for 50 days on diets with 68% carbohydrate as raw maize starch or sucrose substituted on an isoenergetic basis. Rats on sucrose-rich diet showed a decreased glucose assimilation rate despite high plasma insulin values; abdominal and retroperitoneal adipose tissue increased but bodyweight remained unchanged compared with controls on the starch-rich diet.
