Isolation and properties of a 7 S rat immunoglobulin different from IgG

, : Isolation and properties of a 7 S rat immunoglobulin different from IgG. European Journal of Immunology 5(3): 194-197

A 7S rat immunoglobulin class designated IgR (originally described as IgA) was isolated by Na2SO4 precipitation and DEAE-cellulose chromatography from serum of normal or hyperimmune rats of 3 different strains. IgR has a mol. wt. of 160 000 and is present in serum and milk as a monomer. Transfer of IgR across the placenta is limited; the concn. in foetal blood at 20 days gestation was only 3% of maternal concn. whereas 24 h after birth, concn. in serum of suckling rats was about 25% that of mothers' serum, indicating that IgR is present in colostrum and is readily transmitted through intestinal barrier. In hyperimmunized animals, 20% of antibodies were of IgR class. IgR has no anaphylactic capacity, and no homologies could be established with immunoglobulins of other animal species including man.
